This subreddit is not sponsored or endorsed by the University of Illinois or any other on-campus group. As for hours, the max is 9 (at least in LAS). Second term starts the week after that and goes until the end of July/beginning of August. First summer term starts right after spring graduation and lasts about four weeks. It's probably been removed by the overzealous reddit spam filter. Generally, my schedule was 9-11 work, 11-3 class, 3-6 work, work 9-5 weekends. Message a moderator if your posts are not showing up. Given the lack of a regional subreddit, it also covers most things in the Champaign-Urbana area. Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Townies are all welcome. This subreddit is for anyone/anything related to UIUC. I'm currently in the lengthy process of petitioning for state residency status to save money, and I suggest that if you do come here you look into that. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The only downside to attending, in my opinion, is the cost of OOS tuition. I personally love this, because growing up in MA I wanted to continue living in a city, but if you drive 10 minutes away on a good clear night, you'll see a beautiful view of the Milky Way and more stars than you could possibly imagine ever seeing in MA. ![]() Drive about 10 minutes off campus and you're surrounded by cornfields. The further out you drive, the more suburban it gets. Everything is pretty much centered around the university, and it's like a small city that was built for the school. Luckily everything worked out, but if you can afford to fly over to visit first I would highly suggest that. I accepted their offer of admission without ever having visited the school. Everyone is extremely helpful, regardless of whether your problems are academic or not. You will not find it hard to find people you'll fit in with regardless of your background, gender, religion, etc. The department is phenomenal and the community is so very welcoming. I have yet to come across a professor that I haven't loved. First and foremost, the physics program here is amazing. I was born and raised in Fall River, MA and moved here for college. I'm a sophomore physics major here at UIUC. If you have any specific questions about the program, let me know.įirst of all, congratulations on your admission. Granted, switching into engineering is doable if you get decent grades (really good grades for Mechanical, good grades for anything else). Thankfully physics is a relatively easy field to switch out of if you are planning on going to grad school for something else, but if you want to potentially save yourself a few years of time, be careful when considering the major. The one thing you should bear in mind, though, is that you'll spend 4 years studying it, and might ask yourself why if you don't want to go into physics. ![]() The physics program is great there aren't too many programs better than it. Please take this into account for your own sake, since it causes quite a lot of stress in many students. If you plan on doing something other than physics, you'll need to have skills in another area (most likely programming) or go to grad school. A couple of the lab courses that are offered (modern experimental and electronic circuits) in the department I'd recommend if you attend, but unless you plan on taking courses outside of the department, you will be working on almost exclusively theory unless you get a research position. The physics major is fairly intensive as far as theory goes.
